Carry on in the Dunes
Carry on in the dunes is the irreverent title to what could also be described as walking in the footsteps of St. Piran, an Irish sinner but a Cornish saint!
Beginning at 11am we will undertake a 7.5 mile circular walk, first heading south-east to Bolingey, then north-east via roads and public footpaths to St. Piran’s Round, one of the best examples of a ‘plen-an-gwarry’ or a Cornish medieval amphitheatre. From there we take a minor road northwards to seek out the lost church of St. Piran, one of the earliest Christian churches in Cornwall, at Penhale Sands, also a Cornwall wildlife site, which may make a suitable lunch spot. We then head west through the dunes, passing St. Piran’s Cross, to the coast where we can join the coastal footpath, and head north to seek out the pond at the northern end of the beach, before a two mile walk along Ligger or Perran Bay back to the start point, where we will be spoilt for choice for those wanting some kind of liquid or more substantial refreshment.
