Hills, History and Hostelries of a Herefordshire Haven
A 6 mile history walk - easy to moderate - from Ledbury's black & white town centre, just a few miles from M50 (junction 2) with mainline rail from Birmingham and Oxford. A former railtrack trail takes us from the 17th Cent Master`s House to the Herefordshire Way under Bradlow Knoll. We glimpse the former home of Poet Laurate John Masefield 'dirty Britsh coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack' and the famous 45 degree skew - ribbed railway arch.
Another landmark, 21 arch Ledbury viaduct , a spookily inaccessible Hill Fort and the distant Welsh borders should all be in sight as we head for Frith Wood. Here we look down on Wellington Health village before joining Cut Throat Lane. Dog Hill Wood`s majestic Silurian geology - a Geoparkway - takes us down via a walled garden, to the gorgeous cobbled Church Street. Medieval hostelries, a museum and the 1480 Heritage centre are passed as we reach the Grade I Market hall on stilts, of 1615.
Spot a half-timbered Boots Chemist, 16th cent Feathers Hotel and, in Upper Cross, an open ditch pavement near the Civil War-scarred Talbot Hotel. Post walk we can meet up at the Feathers, near our starting point, if you have time. Winter walking means muddy paths and ascents with appropriate boots . Bring poles if normally used
