We were especially lucky with the weather which was fine and sunny with a mild breeze. After a short walk through the village of Holford and having crossed a delightful wooded dell we began a slow climb up the hill along the edge of the Alfoxton estate. At the top, on the moors, there were fine views of the estuary and, beyond, the barely perceptible Welsh mountains. We eventually reached the trig point where the views become truly panoramic and the westerly stretch of coastline including Minehead was visible.
From here we descended sharply, accompanied by occasional toots from the far away and far below West Somerset railway, to the northern boundary of the Quantock Hills to join the Coleridge Way, and then all the way home.
I was challenged to write this account in rhyme (far beyond my capabilities), in honour of the poet, and one member of the party cheekily suggested that it could be The Rime of the Ancient Walker!
At the conclusion of the walk four of us repaired to the Plough Inn nearby.
Thank you, John, for the photos.
